Kyle Baldock is an Australian BMX rider from the Gold Coast, Queensland, who competes in both park and dirt. He won gold in both BMX Park and BMX Dirt at the 2013 X Games in Foz do Iguaçu, Brazil, then won X Games dirt gold again in 2014 and 2015. He was one of the dominant contest riders of the early to mid 2010s, known for big, technical runs and for being equally strong on wooden ramps and dirt jumps.
Early life and background
Baldock was born on 29 March 1991 on the Gold Coast in Queensland. The region's warm climate and large number of concrete skateparks have produced a long line of strong freestyle riders, and Baldock grew up riding them. See BMX in Australia and Australian BMX skateparks for the background.
He was winning at national level by his late teens. Reference sources list a win at a Core Series round in Queensland in 2009, and by 2011 he was competing and winning on the international circuit.
Career
Breakthrough: Dew Tour and the BMX Worlds
Baldock's international breakthrough came in 2011 on the Dew Tour. He won the park event at the Ocean City stop and the big air event at the Salt Lake City stop that year, two very different formats that showed his range.
In 2012 he won the dirt contest at the BMX Worlds in Cologne, Germany, a long-running freestyle event that drew most of the top dirt riders of the time. (This is a separate event from the UCI BMX World Championships, which did not include freestyle park until 2017.)
X Games
Baldock's X Games record is the core of his career:
| Year | Location | Event | Result |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2013 | Foz do Iguaçu, Brazil | BMX Park | Gold |
| 2013 | Foz do Iguaçu, Brazil | BMX Dirt | Gold |
| 2014 | Austin, USA | BMX Dirt | Gold |
| 2015 | Austin, USA | BMX Dirt | Gold |
| 2016 | Austin, USA | BMX Park Best Trick | Gold |
| 2016 | Austin, USA | BMX Park | Bronze |
| 2017 | Minneapolis, USA | BMX Park Best Trick | Gold |
| 2017 | Minneapolis, USA | BMX Dirt | Bronze |
| 2018 | Sydney, Australia | BMX Dirt | Silver |
The 2013 X Games in Brazil was his first X Games medal and his biggest single day. He won BMX Park ahead of his Monster Energy teammate Pat Casey, then won BMX Dirt later the same day. Winning both events at one X Games put him in rare company.
His 2014 and 2015 dirt golds in Austin made him the defending champion twice over. The 2016 best trick win was in Dave Mirra's BMX Park Best Trick, the event named in honour of Dave Mirra, who had died earlier that year. He defended that title in Minneapolis in 2017, about an hour after taking bronze in BMX Dirt.
At X Games Sydney in 2018, in front of a home crowd, he took silver in BMX Dirt behind Poland's Dawid Godziek, his first X Games silver. FAT BMX described it as his tenth X Games medal. The table above lists the nine medals confirmed in event results, so either one medal is missing from the record or the reported count was off by one.
Other contests
Baldock also won the dirt contest at Red Bull Farm Jam in 2013 and the BMX Jam dirt event at the Monster Energy Cup in 2015. Later in his career he competed in park on the UCI-sanctioned circuit, including the FISE World Series in Montpellier in 2019, where he set an early high score as the first rider to drop in the semi-final.
Riding style
Baldock's riding combines size with technical difficulty. Features include:
- Rotations. Big 360 and backflip variations combined with tailwhips and bar spins, often stacked into one trick.
- Versatility. The same approach works for him on a wooden park course and on a set of large dirt jumps, which is uncommon at the top level. Most contest riders specialise in one.
- Contest consistency. In his peak years he regularly put down complete, high-scoring runs when it mattered, the key to winning multiple X Games finals.
His best trick wins show that he could also produce one-off moments, not just consistent runs.
Legacy
Baldock was one of the first Australian freestyle riders to dominate the X Games, before BMX freestyle joined the Olympics. His results in the early 2010s helped show that Gold Coast and Queensland riders could win at the highest level, and the generation that followed, including Olympic champion Logan Martin, came up in the same scene.
His double gold in Brazil in 2013 remains one of the standout achievements in X Games BMX, because so few riders have won both park and dirt at the top level, let alone on the same day.
