NBD means "never been done". It describes a trick, line or move on an obstacle that, as far as anyone knows, no one has landed before. ABD means "already been done", and is the opposite.
Meaning
An NBD can be a brand new trick, a new combination of tricks, or a known trick done on a spot nobody has ridden. The last case is common in street riding, where an unridden rail or gap can make a standard trick an NBD.
The claim is about the trick on record. Riders check clips, edits and social media before calling something an NBD. If another rider has already landed it, even years ago or in a small edit, it is an ABD.
Calling something an NBD is a big statement. Riders usually say "this might be NBD" or "I think this is NBD" when they are unsure. It is hard to prove that nothing has ever been done, so the label often shows up with a bit of caution.
ABD is mostly used by commenters and friends. It is sometimes friendly and sometimes a put-down, depending on tone.
Origin and usage
The exact origin of the abbreviation is not documented. The phrase "never been done" is also used in skateboarding, snowboarding and other action sports, and the shortened NBD is common wherever progression is filmed. Online edits and comment sections helped spread both NBD and ABD.
Writers use it as an adjective ("an NBD trick") or a noun ("he landed an NBD"). It often comes with a web edit title or caption. An NBD is a common choice for an ender since it gives a part a strong finish.
NBD is not a measure of difficulty. A trick can be NBD and fairly simple, or very hard and already done. A very hard trick is more often called a hammer.
Examples
- "He landed a switch barspin to fakie on that rail. I think it's NBD."
- "Looks new, but it's ABD, someone did it in an edit a few years back."
- "We found a spot with a gap nobody has touched, so anything we land there is basically NBD."
