Updated 2 min read357 words
Sketchy describes anything that looks or feels close to going wrong. A sketchy landing is one where the rider survives but is off balance, off line or barely holding on. The word also covers risky setups, unsafe spots and parts that look worn out.
Meaning
Riders use sketchy in a few ways.
- A trick or landing. The rider lands, but it is not clean. The bike wobbles, a foot slips off a pedal, or the rider bails a moment later.
- A setup. A tight run-up, a wet surface or a gap with a bad landing is sketchy before anyone leaves the ground.
- A spot. A spot with loose gravel, a bumpy approach or traffic nearby can be called sketchy even if the obstacle itself is fine.
- Gear. A loose headset, a cracked rim or a bent crank all earn the word.
The opposite of sketchy is dialed. A dialed trick is repeatable and controlled. A sketchy one is a coin flip.
Origin and usage
Sketchy is ordinary English slang for something rough or unreliable, and it is used across skateboarding, snowboarding and other board and bike sports. Who first used it in BMX is not documented.
Tone matters. Said before a trick, it is a warning: "that landing looks sketchy." Said after, it can be a joke or a compliment for a good save. Filmers and friends often use it to describe a line that was ridden at the edge of control.
Sketchy is not always a reason to stop. It is a signal to slow down, check the run-up, inspect the bike or choose a different obstacle. Many crashes start with something the rider already felt was sketchy.
Examples
- "That 360 was sketchy, but you rode it out."
- "I am not hitting that ledge. The run-up is too sketchy."
- "Check your stem bolts before we leave. The bars felt sketchy on that last landing."
