What Size BMX Bike Do I Need?
Most teens and adults fit a 20 inch wheel BMX with a 20 to 21 inch top tube, chosen by height first and then adjusted for arm length and riding style.

Most teenagers and adults fit a BMX with 20 inch wheels and a top tube between 20 and 21 inches. Riders under about 160 cm usually suit a 20 to 20.25 inch top tube. Riders from 165 to 180 cm usually suit 20.5 to 20.75 inches. Taller riders suit 21 inches or longer. Children use smaller wheels, and a few very tall adults move up to 22 or 24 inch wheels. The chart is a starting point, and personal preference matters as much as the numbers.
Top tube length by rider height
Top tube length is the main sizing number on a BMX. It is the horizontal distance along the top of the frame, measured in inches. A longer top tube gives more room between your hands and your seat. A shorter one makes the bike feel smaller and easier to throw around.
| Rider height | Suggested top tube | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Under 140 cm | 18 to 19.5 in | Mini or junior frames on 20 inch wheels |
| 140 to 160 cm | 20.0 to 20.25 in | Common starting size for teens |
| 160 to 165 cm | 20.25 to 20.5 in | Either size can work |
| 165 to 180 cm | 20.5 to 20.75 in | The most common adult range |
| 180 to 190 cm | 20.75 to 21.0 in | Many riders pick 21 in |
| Over 190 cm | 21.0 in and above | Also consider 22 or 24 inch wheels |
These figures are rough. Brands measure and name their sizes differently, so always check the actual top tube number on the product page rather than a "small" or "medium" label.
Why preference matters
Two riders of the same height can want different bikes. Arm length, torso length and riding style all change the answer.
- Shorter top tube: quicker to spin, hop and flip. Many street and flatland riders choose a size down for their height.
- Longer top tube: more stable at speed and on big landings. Many park, dirt jumping and racing riders choose a size up.
If you are unsure, pick the middle of your range and adjust with parts instead of changing frames.
Other numbers that change the fit
Top tube length is not the whole story. You can tune the fit cheaply with these parts:
- Handlebars: taller bars (more rise) make a bike feel shorter and more upright. Rise is measured in inches and commonly runs from about 8 to 10 inches.
- Stem: a shorter or longer stem moves your hands closer to or further from you.
- Rear end length: the distance from the cranks to the rear axle. Shorter rear ends feel lively, longer ones feel stable.
- Cranks: common lengths are 165, 170 and 175 mm. Taller riders often prefer longer arms.
See frame geometry for how these measurements work together.
Kids' sizes
Children's BMX bikes are sized by wheel diameter. The ages and heights below are approximate. Judge fit by how the child stands and pedals, not by age.
| Wheel size | Approximate age | Approximate height |
|---|---|---|
| 12 inch | 2 to 4 years | Up to about 100 cm |
| 14 inch | 3 to 5 years | About 95 to 110 cm |
| 16 inch | 4 to 7 years | About 105 to 120 cm |
| 18 inch | 6 to 8 years | About 115 to 130 cm |
| 20 inch (mini or junior) | 7 years and up | About 125 to 140 cm |
Avoid buying a bike far too big for a child to grow into. An oversized bike is harder to control, and it makes learning slower and less safe.
Why 20 inch is the standard
Freestyle and race BMX are built around 20 inch wheels. Tyres, rims, forks and frames are all made for that size, so replacement parts are easy to find and cheap. Almost every trick you see in a video part was done on a 20 inch bike.
22 and 24 inch bikes
Larger wheels roll more smoothly and feel steadier. They suit taller adults, riders who want a cruising bike, and racers in cruiser classes (24 inch wheels are common in cruiser classes). The trade-offs are weight, a slower feel in the air and far fewer parts to choose from. If you plan to learn tricks, a 20 inch bike is almost always the better choice.
How to check the fit
- Stand over the bike with your feet flat. You should have clear room between you and the top tube.
- Stand on the pedals with the cranks level. Your knees and elbows should be slightly bent, not locked.
- Hold the grips and look down. Your back should be fairly flat, not hunched or stretched.
- Roll forward and pump the bike. It should feel stable, not twitchy or cramped.
- Turn the bars fully both ways. Your knees should not hit the bars or the stem.
If you can, ride a friend's bike with a similar top tube before buying. A test ride beats any chart.
Common mistakes
- Buying a bike to grow into. Fit now matters more than fit next year.
- Judging by the label "small" or "large" and not by the top tube number.
- Ignoring bar rise and stem length, which change the fit as much as the frame does.
- Choosing a very long frame for tricks because it is "more stable". Longer frames are harder to rotate and manual.

Frequently asked questions about What Size BMX Bike Do I Need?
Is 20 inch the only BMX wheel size?
No, but it is the standard. Kids' bikes use 12, 14, 16 and 18 inch wheels, and some taller adults ride 22 or 24 inch bikes. Almost every freestyle frame, fork and part is made for 20 inch wheels.
Can an adult ride a 20 inch BMX?
Yes. Most adult riders do. Choose a frame with a top tube of 20.5 inches or longer, and look at 22 or 24 inch wheels only if you are very tall or mostly want to cruise.
What if I am between two top tube sizes?
Choose by riding style. Go shorter for technical street riding and flatland. Go longer for park, dirt jumps, racing and stability at speed.
